Three innovations for restarting

da | 23 Nov, 20 | Editoriale |

These are complex and contradictory times for industry. For Industry 4.0, 2019 was a year to remember. According to data from Politecnico di Milano's Industry 4.0 Observatory, of the almost €4 billion spent in our country during 2019 (+28% compared to 2018), 60% was dedicated to connectivity and data acquisition projects.

Complementary data provided by EY Digital Manufacturing Maturity Index, also related to 2019, indicate that half of Italian companies have now laid stable foundations for process digitisation, although 37% are at an early stage of this journey.

Unfortunately, the impact of the Covid-19 effect should not be overlooked. In 2020, 26.5% of companies will postpone at least half of their planned investments. Having said that, digital transformation is a train that may slow down but will certainly not stop running. That is why it is worthwhile to point the antennae on some innovations from which we expect the main thrust for a profound renewal in automation and therefore for industrial restart.

IT / OT convergence

In the new organisational context supported by Industry 4.0 initiatives, the factory has become a place of complexity and technological concentration, in which we are witnessing the so-called convergence of IT (Information Technology) and OT (Operational Technology). In essence, companies have realised that in order to optimise critical processes, the two worlds must have a stable dialogue with each other and with the outside world.

Edge Computing

Edge computing is an evolution of the cloud to support the Internet of Things. It provides a bridge between data from IoT devices that needs to be shared in the cloud, and data that needs to be processed decentrally at the edge of the enterprise network, in the Edge, to stabilise data flow and reduce latency.

5G

Covid-19 permitting, forecasts estimate that 5G network standardisation will take a big step forward by 2020. 5G technologies are ideal candidates to support the digital transformation, as they promise to enable the capabilities needed for IoT and new services essential for the digitised industry: ultra-broadband availability, energy efficiency, low latency. The new generation of mobile connections promises speeds up to 100 times faster than 4G. Mind-boggling performance.
